Here are some of our favorite outdoor activities in the Edmond area, along with tips for staying safe as you enjoy your forays into nature.

Farmers’ Markets

We love visiting farmers’ markets for their bounty of colorful fruits and vegetables, along with the opportunity to get some exercise as we stroll the isles of fresh produce, plants and baked goods. The Edmond Farmers Market, at 26 West First St., has provided local businesses and farmers a chance to offer their wares directly to the public since 1988.

The market’s downtown location at Festival Marketplace brings in a wide variety of customers and provides the perfect spot for several hours of leisurely shopping. In addition to locally grown fruits and vegetables, you’ll find flowers and gardening products, along with a calendar of events to enjoy.

During spring and summer, the market is open Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you’re interested in visiting other farmers’ markets, you’ll find a selection just a short drive away in and around Oklahoma City.

Hiking Trails

Whether you enjoy a moderately paced stroll or a challenging climb, you can take advantage of the many hiking trails in and around Edmond.

For a fun and active outing, consider Bluff Creek Trail, at 13009 Burnt Oak Road in Oklahoma City. It is multi-use trail and is frequented by both cyclists and hikers. Trail users are asked to be cautious if cycling at a fast pace on the trail and to share the trail courteously with people who prefer to walk or jog.

In Norman — just over 30 minutes away by car — you can enjoy Clear Bay Trail, part of Lake Thunderbird State Park. You’ll find the Clear Bay Trail system to the south of Lake Thunderbird. The trail provides more than 18 miles of active areas for hikers and cyclists at every skill level. You can choose one of the five trails to explore or walk them all as a loop.

Bird Watching

If you’re a devoted birder, consider attending meetings of the Oklahoma City Audubon Society, which offers a variety of resources including a listing of the best locations for spotting birds. Among many birding “hot spots,” the group lists Lake Hefner, a 2,500-acre body of water made in 1947 that serves as a water reservoir for Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma is a great state for bird watching, with nearly 500 species of feathered residents calling the state home. Twice a year, migratory birds make their way through the state, and you may spot species like prairie chickens, American white pelicans, bald eagles and more.
