Make your New Year’s Resolutions Really Stick this Year!

It’s that time of year again. According to StatisticBrain.com, more than half of Americans will make New Year’s resolutions in a few days.
Their research shows that 75% of those who make a resolution on New Year’s Day will still be working on it after a week. After one month, 64% will be sticking to their new plan. And by July, 46% will still be at it. We think that’s pretty good–almost half of those who make a goal in January are continuing with the resolution by summer!
Scranton University psychology professor Dr. John Norcross and author of Changeology: 5 Steps to Realizing your Goals and Resolutions has studied New Year’s resolutions and says this:
“Contrary to widespread public opinion, a considerable proportion of New Year resolvers do succeed. You are 10 times more likely to change by making a New Year’s resolution compared to non-resolvers with the identical goals and comparable motivation to change.”
With a few relatively painless strategies, you can significantly boost your odds of succeeding.
First, it’s important to make a resolution that is actually achievable. The easiest way to do this is to break down the resolution into smaller goals. For instance, instead of saying that you’d like to lose 50 pounds, it is easier to succeed if you make a goal of losing 5 pounds a month. Dr. Norcross adds, “In my experience, those people whose New Year’s resolutions seem to have the most traction keep them simple – and realistic.”
Make specific and measurable goals. Don’t make a resolution to “exercise more.” Instead, look at your Tapestry calendar, pick out some exercise classes you would like to attend, and then make an appointment with yourself to attend them on specific days and times. Outside of exercise classes, you could make a specific resolution like, “Walk one mile every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.” If it’s nice weather, walk outside. If it’s not, use the Tapestry treadmills. Just stick to it!
Use whatever works for you, but keep a record of how you’re meeting your goal. This can be checkmarks on a calendar or writing in a journal, but experts agree that if you physically keep track of your progress somewhere, you’re more likely to continue.
Don’t Give Up
Everyone is going to have a bad day, or week, or even month…but don’t quit! Think about why you had a setback, learn from it, and get back on track. Don’t beat yourself up over it–those who eventually succeed are the ones who just keep at it.
Reward Small Achievements
Now for the fun part. When you meet a portion of your goal, give yourself a reward. You lost 10 pounds of that 50 you eventually want to lose? Maybe go shopping and get a new item of clothing. You went to the exercise class three times a week for the entire month? Get a friend and go see a movie or have a nice dinner out. The important thing is to recognize your achievements along the way. Small rewards will keep you focused and excited about meeting your goals.
